About
So I finally got around to writing a professional blog. I’ve been planning on starting one for a long time, but never got around to actually doing it, mostly due to time constraints.
This blog serves just one purpose : to publish the ideas that sometimes pop into my head, often while working on a technical solution, sometimes while thinking about a business idea or just while browsing the Web.
It will be a collection of long, technical or business oriented articles, often mixed with short and succinct items… mostly thoughts about IT, business or anything else that I may find interesting.
My main goal is for this blog to serve as a historical record for myself… if by any chance someone else enjoys reading it, it’ll have served more than its purpose !
Any comments, suggestions, rants, … always welcome !
About me
I’m an IT consultant living near Antwerp, Belgium. I was born on a freezing winter night in 1978.
Next to my job, I enjoy going for a run (if you speak Dutch, you can read more on my athletics blog), going out for a nice dinner and making city trips.
Professional biography
My first introduction to IT came in the mid-80s when, as an 8-year old, I learned how to program in Basic.
During the 90s, I developed (among many other things) anti-virus/trojan upload scanning tools for the ProBoard BBS and started my Computer Sciences studies. I also took my first steps on the (still non-graphical) Internet in the early 90s.
In 1999, I launched a free webmaster tools site called GNet, which featured a search engine submission system, banner exchange, etc.
In 2001, I obtained bachelor’s degrees in Applied Computer Sciences & Technologies and in Business Economics.
From 2000 to 2002, I was project lead of phpAdsNew, an open source advertising system now known as OpenX, currently serving approx. 300 billion ads per month (including on sites such as Techcrunch and Cnet.com).
I’m currently the managing director of FirstLink Networks, a small Belgian IT consulting company, founded in 2000.
Initially, we provided domain name services and IT consulting services.
During 2003 and 2004, we deployed a colocation and IP Transit service. The division was sold in late 2004.
Returning to my roots, in 2005 I began working as an IT Consultant again, mostly as analyst, developer or technical project manager.
Currently, I’m starting up a new business, building the first PHP centered company in Belgium.
